Rooted in Community

When Aliesha Walz, C’07, reflects on her career in philanthropy, one thing stands out: the power of helping her local community. “We help the Washington County community give close to home,” she says. “That’s what drives everything we do.”

In May 2025, Walz was appointed president and CEO of the Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF), where she strives to strengthen local charities through collaborative leadership and strategic investments. With more than $60 million in assets, the WCCF is the largest publicly supported grant-maker in its home community. More than 150 nonprofit organizations, including school districts, arts organizations, domestic violence shelters, and animal rescue groups are served annually through its work.

Her time as a student at Saint Vincent College laid the groundwork. As an English major and a member of the women’s tennis team, Walz found early mentors who helped her see the possibilities in nonprofit leadership. “Coach Jim Bendel [C’60, D’85] was a major influence,” she recounts. “He dedicated his life to philanthropy and continued to mentor me when I entered the field.”

She also credits the English department with sharpening the skills that have carried her through her work, particularly Dr. Dennis McDaniel, C’79; Dr. William Snyder, C’73; and Dr. Frances Zauhar. Today, she and her husband, Andrew, C’06, G’12, stay connected to the Saint Vincent community, having served on the alumni council and returning for regular campus visits.
